Why a Ceiling Stain Can Be Far From a Roof Leak
The brown mark on the ceiling tells you where water reached the room. It does not necessarily show where rain crossed the roof. Understanding that path helps explain why a lasting repair starts with the roof detail rather than the stain.
Water follows the roof assembly
Rain entering at a failed connection can run along underlayment, decking or framing before it drips into the space below. The entry might be upslope from the mark. Wind-driven rain can also expose an opening that does not leak in every ordinary shower.
That is why sealing the spot directly above an indoor mark can leave the actual path open. The affected flashing, valley or penetration has to be considered with the surrounding roof.
A flashing repair has to reconnect the water path
A split collar leaves a gap beside the vent pipe. The flashing base still needs to sit in the correct relationship to the shingle courses. Water must leave the penetration and return to the roof surface.
Adding material over the exposed split is different from rebuilding the connection. The surrounding shingles and support determine how the lasting repair is made.

The surrounding roof sets the repair boundary
Workable adjoining shingles, compatible replacement material and sound support give the repair somewhere reliable to connect. Brittle covering can break during lifting. Deterioration in several areas can change the direction toward replacement.
Purcell Roof Pros can help establish the difference through a free roof inspection and a roofer walking the roof. Tell us where the mark appeared and whether water is coming in now.
